1. may well 「有理由；難怪；可能」=「had better」

She may well not want to travel alone.她很有可能不想獨自旅行。

2. may as well /might as well=「最好；不如…的好；不妨；要不就….」

You may as well see the doctor. 你最好去看醫生

We may as well start the meeting - the others will be here soon.

我們要不開始開會吧! 其他的人很快會來的。

3. may as well +  A  as +  B   =「與其B不如A」、「做B等同於做A」

One may as well not know a thing at all as know it imperfectly. (與其一知半解不如完全不知)

4. might as well +  A  as +  B =「與其B不如A」、「做B等同於做A」

You might as well throw your money into the sea as lend it to him. 與其借錢給他不如把它丟入海裡

1. had better/best +Vr (表未來 ) 最好

2. had better/best + have + Vpp (=表過去 ) 最好 表示所指的動作沒有成為事實

Yesterday you had better have given him a call in advance , but you didn’t.

你昨天最好先打電話給他就好了，可惜你沒有

You had better have done so.   最好你已照如此做
